Decree-Law nº 38/2005, of 17 February established Fundação Museu Nacional Ferroviário Armando Ginestal Machado. The founding members included the Portuguese State, REFER, CP, the Entroncamento Municipal Authority and numerous private companies working in the rail sector.

This Foundation was created to meet the needs of rail companies in the preservation, promotion, study and publicising of their historical heritage.
