Railway stations increasingly consist of open spaces which also incorporate commercial components, thus offering passengers/ clients a wide range of services and equipment in which accessibility, functionality, comfort and safety are fundamental factors.
The investment made to build new stations (Braga, Lisbon – Oriente), or to modernise existing stations (Rossio, Campanhã), enhancing them with additional services, the creation of interfaces and the elimination of architectural barriers has ensured that the railways are a comfortable and attractive transport option.
REFER also seeks to create solutions that, through partnerships and contracts, make it possible to reuse and ensure the profitability of buildings that are not directly used for railway operations, maintaining integrity by reorienting them towards new activities that benefit the community (commerce, tourism, social infrastructure).
In situations in which buildings and/or the surrounding land are better suited for residential and commercial purposes, REFER has also implemented projects for urban development and rehabilitation (e.g. in Viana do Castelo and Sines).
