Human vigilance and video surveillance systems have been progressively expanded and modernised at stations and at other specific points of railway infrastructure, thus guaranteeing that facilities function normally and that the railway heritage and those who use such spaces are suitably protected.

REFER has also developed internal emergency plans, which guarantee suitable effectiveness while managing any incident which could give rise to a critical situation for (internal and external) occupants, in articulation with external entities that provide emergency assistance.

Attention is paid, also, in cooperation with other entities, to forest protection against fires that could affect railway lines.
