What is the difference between REFER and CP? What are the responsibilities of each company?

REFER is responsible for the management of the infrastructure (lines, stations, buildings, etc.).

CP is a rail operator which uses the lines managed by REFER.

REFER’s main aim is to provide the public service of full infrastructure management of the national rail lines, including the construction and modernization of said infrastructure.

CP is the company responsible for providing national and international rail transport services for passengers. It is one of REFER’s clients, as is FERTAGUS, companies which pay to use the national rail infrastructure.

In broad terms, CP represents the trains and REFER represents the lines and stations.

What is REFER doing to reduce accidents at level crossings?

Wide ranging publicity and public awareness campaigns and have been REFER’s key focus points. REFER is currently running a campaign called – STOP LISTEN LOOK – which has the aim of raising awareness and alerting the public to the need to respect sign posting and to strictly comply with safety rules whenever they use a level crossing.

Who should I contact in the event of a complaint/information request regarding stations?

Do I need any type of authorization to take photographs / film your installations/rail infrastructure? How can I obtain this authorization?

Authorization is not required to take photographs and/or film railway stations and platforms for private use.

If the images are for commercial purposes, please contact the Department of Communication and Internacional Affairs: ci@refer.pt. Alternatively, please use the form which can be found in the Contact us area on this Site.

Note: With regard to trains, requests should be sent to the respective rail operator.

What is minimum distance from a rail line or public rail property where construction may take place?

Information on the minimum distances from the rail line or a public rail property allowed for construction can be consulted in legislation on Public Rail Property.

It should be noted that the “non aedificandi” zones identified in article 15 are calculated from the limits of Public Rail Property.

How is it possible to find out if the route of the high-speed train will pass a specific location so as to be able to plan the construction of a house or buy a plot of land?
